Poland – March 10, 2018
Northern Illinois University Study Abroad
My day began early
at 7:30 a.m. when I woke up to get ready for the planned activities.
Surprisingly, I slept well enough so waking up was not difficult. Breakfast was
buffet style with plenty to choose from. I tried a specific cottage cheese that
is highly popular in Poland—it looked yummy but it was not my favorite.
Our first
destination was the historic Silver Mine. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a
friendly tour guide. A brief video covering basic history of the Silver Mine was
shown to provide us a better understanding of what we were about to see. The tour
was both exciting and informational.
Second stop was in
the older part of Katowice where architecture and roads are all constructed
with brick. We first began by taking a tour inside a museum which featured examples
of what flats looked like in the early 19th century. At that time,
the 3 main religions were catholic, protestant, and Jewish so there were many
religious paintings on display. After this tour, I took pictures of the
exterior and interior of a beautiful church just across the street.
The third stop was
at an art gallery. There were singular works of art on display as well as
series. The most interesting thing about this gallery is that the outside area
included artwork too which was fun to look at since today was on the warmer
side. After about an hour of viewing art, we headed back to our hotel and have
the rest of the evening to ourselves. We will be using it to purchase needed
items and to further explore the city of Katowice.
