Day 3

Poland – March 11, 2018

Northern Illinois University Study Abroad

I didn't know Poland had bison until today when we visited Skansen which is an Open-Air Museum with the farmhouses of Pszczyna. Near the farmhouses was a small petting zoo where I saw bison, deer, and peacocks. After visiting with the animals, my group and I explored the houses—they were constructed entirely from wood and contained original furniture from the 18th century from when they were built. Inside the houses also included many religious paintings and statues but I do not know if those were original artworks.

After visiting this museum, we got on the bus and headed toward our next destination which was a palace. When I saw the exterior, my jaw dropped and I could not wait to go inside. Because there were so many visitors, we were given a headset which worked as our tour guide for each available room in the palace.

The last destination on our agenda was one which made my stomach spin just thinking about. We visited the largest concentration camp in Auschwitz. I remember first learning about the Holocaust at a young age and seeing documentaries over the years—experiencing the horrors of this tragic event in person was eye-opening. Although it was very sad, I am grateful I got to experience exploring a historic site most people may never get the chance to see.
